The most famous project aimed at teaching computer literacy to children from the poorest countries of the world is called the One Laptop per Child. The essence of this initiative lies in the development of a cheap netbook worth about 100 US dollars, which could be distributed en masse to schoolchildren from third world countries for free.
The initiative was founded in 2005, and in 2007 began the production and distribution of compact notebooks XO-1. Moreover, it was carried out both for the money of charitable foundations and individual states, and for individual people. For private buyers, the XO-1 is twice as expensive – a surcharge of $ 100 is used to provide one child with a device somewhere in Africa or Asia.
Over time, as part of the One Laptop per Child, the XO-3 tablet computer project also appeared, designed for the same purposes. This device, among other things, is equipped with a solar panel, because not all children have the opportunity to charge gadgets from the outlet.
For many poor people, the main problem when buying a computer is its relatively high price. After all, even XO-1 costs $ 100, which is higher than the average salary of a working person in dozens of countries around the world. But with the advent of the Raspberry Pi, this problem ceases to be relevant – computers are becoming available, indeed, to all the inhabitants of the Earth.
Raspberry Pi began with the desire of the British programmer David Braben to create the cheapest computer to learn computer science. The device itself is a small fee the size of a bank card to which you can connect external devices, including the network cable. Raspberry Pi has a processor with a clock frequency of 700 MHz and permanent memory based on flash cards.
The Raspberry Pi project quickly gained immense popularity around the world. After all, the cost of such a computer is 25 and 35 US dollars, depending on the modification. This means that it is available even to the poorest people in the poorest countries.
Kilgoris Project – e-book instead of textbooks
One of the major obstacles to mass education is the lack of textbooks for all children in the classroom. Sometimes it turns out that several people use the same book at once, which is very bad for the quality of material development and greatly slows down the learning process.
The creators of the Kilgoris Project charity project found a way out of this by mass distribution of e-books to students from poor countries. Firstly, they are much cheaper than even $ 100 tablets, and secondly, in one such device all textbooks in all subjects for all the years of study can be stored. And the economy of the E-Ink technology will allow you to fight against the chronic lack of electricity.
