What is ping?

Do you know what ping is? If not, I congratulate you, you addressed this question to! In this article you can fully familiarize yourself with this concept. We begin, as usual with the most important, with the definition. As the all-knowing Wikipedia tells us, ping is the official computer program, which is designed to test connections on networks based on TCP / IP. On our site you also have the opportunity to determine ping. You can do this if you follow the link.

The name of this utility derives from the English name of the sound of an impulse that sonar produces when a pulse is reflected from any things. The word ping is an acronym for Packet InterNet Grouper (Groper).
This utility was made by an American scientist – Mike Muuss in the winter of 1983, who worked at the Ballistics Research Laboratory.

The rules according to which this utility works basically consist in sending an echo request to a node and in the hope of an echo response from it. Any site on the World Wide Web is required to be able to receive echo requests and send echo replies, of course, if it has access to the network and is functioning. The non-arrival of the echo-response from the server means: either the server is frozen, or there is an unrecoverable damage to the network at the client-server site, bypassing the other path that is not possible. The time that elapses from the beginning of sending a request to receiving a response helps to recognize bilateral suspensions along the way and the frequency of data loss, that is, to directly find out how loaded the data transfer channels and connecting devices are.

Another ping means the time that is spent on sending data in computer networks from client to server and vice versa (measured in ms – millisecond). Ping time has an unbreakable connection with connection speed and channel load throughout the entire route from client to server.

If you don’t receive any ICMP replies at all, this may mean that the remote host, or any intermediate router, blocks the echo reply or ignores the echo request.

The ping utility is considered to be one of the basic checkers on TCP / IP networks and, as a rule, it is already basic on all of today’s network operating systems. Due to the fact that this utility uses ICMP and is engaged in the creation of raw-packets, for its proper functioning in unix-systems you definitely need superuser rights. To use ping on / bin / ping by simple users, it is necessary to put the SUID bits in the access rights.
