If the webcam of the laptop does not work
Most modern laptops are equipped with webcams. Very convenient: you do not need to connect anything extra, as long as the Internet is on – and you can video chat with friends and acquaintances. But it happens that the webcam refuses to work. What to do if the laptop’s webcam does not work?
As in the case of many other faults, the problem with the web camera can be both software and hardware. Software problems are related to software, hardware – with the “stuffing” of your laptop. If the webcam of the laptop does not work, first you need to check the version with the software problem: such problems can usually be solved by yourself. In the case of a hardware problem, the laptop will have to be carried in for repair.
If the webcam of the laptop does not work, you need to first check whether it is turned on. In some laptops, the webcam is turned on and off by the Fn key combination and one of the F1-F12 function keys (usually F10 or F6, you can find out by the icons near the keys or from the instructions for the laptop). Maybe the laptop camera was turned off and you just need to turn it on.
Then check if the drivers are installed on the webcam. Let’s say it happens that the operating system did not “pick up” the device (this happens, for example, if you use the new version of the operating system on a new laptop that came out recently, it simply cannot be stitched into the driver of a new device). Or the driver was damaged as a result of some kind of system failure.
To check for the presence of drivers, go to the Device Manager in the Control Panel and find the web camera there in the list. If there is no camera, the system does not see it. If there is a camera, but there is a yellow question mark in front of it, you need to remove the driver, followed by the device.
To remove the driver, right-click on the line with the web camera and select the Properties item in the context menu. In the hardware properties window, go to the Driver tab and click the Delete button. If the system asks for confirmation of deletion, click OK. When the driver is removed, remove the device (right click on the device – Delete), then restart the laptop and install the driver on the web camera.
If a “native” driver disk was included with the laptop, you can try installing the driver for the webcam from it. If there is no disk, go to the manufacturer’s website, select your laptop model and operating system, download and install the necessary driver. You need to download the driver from the manufacturer’s site, and not from suspicious portals! Choose drivers for your particular OS version, drivers for Windows XP on Windows 7 are unlikely to help.
If there are several driver versions, choose the latest one and start trying with it – perhaps in the previous version of the driver there was some kind of error fixed in the new version. But sometimes it happens that just in the new versions there are some flaws that are not in the old ones. Therefore, if installing a new version of the driver does not help, try installing an older one (before that, of course, removing the previously installed one, installing one driver over the other is unlikely to be effective).
How to install drivers after installing the webcam? If you have a Windows XP operating system, you will most likely be able to find the camera directly in the My Computer window. In some models of laptops, when installing drivers, a special utility for working with a webcam is also installed, you need to run this utility. If you can’t find a camera anywhere, you can’t use a special utility either — install Skype or any other program that involves working with the camera, and check that the camera is working with it.
If reinstalling the drivers did not help, the reason why the laptop’s webcam does not work may be hardware. There are two main reasons: it is a breakdown of the camera itself or a breakdown of the cable connecting the camera with the motherboard. In both cases, they can only help you in a service center. We advise you to first take the laptop to diagnose and find out the preliminary cost of the repair: it may be cheaper and easier to buy an external webcam connected via USB than repair the built-in one.
When the webcam of the laptop does not work, do not panic. In most cases, it is possible to get by with “little blood” – reinstalling the drivers.
