What to look for when building a computer
Assembling a computer includes two slightly different concepts. The first is planning and assembly on paper or on the Internet for all the “spare parts”, and the second is when…

Connect a second hard drive

Many PC users feel an acute lack of memory on the computer. Some dump information to different drives, while others decide to connect an additional hard drive. In order not to call the master or not to go with the system unit to the service center, many decide to connect the second hard on their own. And this is where the problems begin. SooWeb.Ru will tell you how to connect a second hard drive to the computer.

You can connect not only the new hard drive, but also hard from any other computer. The work algorithm will be the same in both cases. But just not everyone knows how to properly connect a second hard drive so that the computer recognizes it right away. For many, this does not work immediately, so these people go to the store or service center, arguing that the second hard does not work. But in fact, as it turns out, the computer simply did not see the hard drive. And for good reason.

Before you connect the hard drive, you need to figure out how you want to do it. Some computers are equipped with a so-called “pocket” (you can install it in the service center, after asking for it, or when manually assembling a computer). In order to connect a second hard drive to all other computers, you will have to climb into the middle of the system unit. The essence of connecting even to the “pocket”, even in the usual way, is the same. The second hard drive is connected to the cable, and the computer recognizes it as a built-in drive E or F.

So, now it is worth telling that many people forget to do before plugging in hard – rearrange the jumper. Jumper is a jumper that is located on the contacts of the hard drive. What is a jumper for?

Jumpers are used to indicate on the hard drives themselves, which of them will work in master mode (Master), and which – slave (Slave). The operating system is always loaded in the leading hard drive. This means that when a second hard disk is connected in Slave mode, the OS will not boot from it. All hard drives with computers are equipped with Master mode. Therefore, all additional hard drives must work in Slave mode. This is what many PC users do not take into account and connect the second hard drive, which also works in Master mode.

So, putting the jumper in Slave mode on the connected hard drive, connect it to the loop inside the system unit. If you have a pocket, then the connection occurs outside. Now you can just boot the computer. It should automatically detect the second hard disk. For reliability when booting your computer, go to the BIOS (on different operating systems, these are F2 or Delete keys). In the “Boot” menu, select the correct parameters for each of the hard drives. To do this, put the hard drive in the mode of Second Boot Device.

In addition to the Master and Slave modes, jumpers can be set to the Cable Select position. To connect the hard drive in this mode, you need a Y-shaped cable. The central connector of this cable connects to the motherboard. Extreme plugs connect to the disks. These connectors are unequal, that is, one drive automatically becomes the main drive, the second – the slave. This information is indicated on the cable connectors. It should be warned that using such a cable, both hard drives must be put into Cable Select mode.

Where it is necessary to put jumpers to install one or another mode, it is written in detail on a sticker on the hard drive itself. Also, the same information is indicated on one of the sides of the connector, which simplifies the search for the necessary contacts, on which a jumper must be placed.

The above connection for an additional hard drive is used for IDE-drives. There are also SATA disks. In this case, you need a special cable to connect the drive to the motherboard. Only one device can be connected to one connector. If you use both IDE and SATA disks on your computer, go to the BIOS to designate the main disk from which the computer will boot.

Connecting an additional hard drive may seem complicated only in words. In practice, everything happens very quickly. We hope that now you know how to connect the hard drive to your computer.
